Make The Most Of Your Special Day....Week....Month....year....

Being that it's graduation season, and I am partaking in the excitement this year, I deem it appropriate to post something of this category!

Being a homeschool graduate is great, because even when you graduate you can never stop being homeschooled or homeschooling yourself. When your every day life is learning, you never stop! The same goes for public-schoolers too, I know.

_______________________________________________________

Most everyone asks about college, so here you go, and you're welcome.

I got my "home-college" assignments long before I finished my last schoolbook, and I've already started in on this exercise of Home Management. It's all fine and nice (and really wonderful) to know how to cook, or do your own laundry, or keep your little brothers busy with school when your mom is gone to town. It's also great to be able to clean a toilet or organize a kitchen cupboard.

But can you do all those things, (plus shopping, hospitality, menu planning, more cleaning, dishes, more cleaning, AND self care) all by yourself, all day, week, month, long, without help? Well, that is what my parents wanted to see, so I've started to gradually get into the project of being the main homemaker on Humphrey Hill. I haven't done a "complete takeover" yet but that is planned for a week, in a couple of weeks.

Beyond this interesting and creative exercise, I am writing a book that is near to being stamped as a first-draft. I have been writing it for years actually, but my goal is to finish it this month and my goal is coming along nicely. I plan to publish it, and well, I don't know, but doesn't that sound college-like to you?

Between these things, perhaps starting a business, improving my skills with musical instruments, some travel Lord Willing, and daily life (don't forget the new ideas that pop up from time to time) I'm busy!

Oh, I didn't mention sewing in that list, but it deserves a place there and I have some projects planned for this summer. I am working on an A-line dress made with a very slippery imitation wool dobby fabric, a first experience working with specialty cloth. So far I don't like sewing with specialty cloth - please give me back the cotton I was raised with!!

There are so many fun ways to celebrate life accomplishments like graduations. We're having a family camp-out complete with hot-dogs, s'mores, snacks, and a river with 1,110 rocks to maneuver in a kayak. In addition to this, my mom and I have been scheming a girl's day out to "do the shops" in our local quaint, charming little town. But there are so many more ways to celebrate!

Most everyone has a party* with their friends and family when they graduate. Will you have a themed party or a free-for-all fun party?

*Note: Parties do not have to be wild; in fact, as you already know, parties are more fun to look back on when you don't have to regret being stupid and childish as a celebration of your adulthood.

Many graduates are into sports. ("Ah, all that youthful energy," sigh the visiting grandparents.)

If your family or friends are collectors of outdoor games, I can think of few things better than having a evening of back-yard sports, when it's deliciously warmish-cool outside. Don't forget your coolers of fun pops and juices and iced teas.

Of course, not everyone is into passionately flinging objects at other passionate people and expecting them to catch those objects, screeching hysterically when they do and when they don't. If you are one of those young persons who would rather sit with dignity in a decorated room and have a fun, interesting conversation with others your age, I think you would enjoy an Afternoon Tea or Literary Dinner. Of course, you can't really stay inside the house on a nice summer evening, so a game of croquet or a stroll about the grounds might benefit your party.

There are also those in-between people who don't fit in either box. They are serious hikers, outdoorsmen & women, fishermen. Sometimes they are the kind of people who would rather not bring 15 teenagers on a fishing trip, and instead would enjoy a group hike in an amazing location they've been wanting to see for awhile, or an organized white-water rafting trip with a picnic or hotdog roast at the end.

Anyhow, whatever way you celebrate, (and I would happily celebrate all 3 ways) keep in mind that the celebrating ain't over when the guests leave. Entering a new time of life is exciting! And since that was so completely cliché, let me put it another way: Celebration, when done right, is so, so good for people. A merry heart does good like medicine, and celebrating, when done right, brings family together and friends together and strengthens important relationships with the bond of happy memories. Ever since I was born I've been one of those kids that wanted to make a cake for most everything, and I'm not stopping now. I love what God has given me in my life, and though I don't need a special reason to make my life, and my family's life, special, I've got one now so I want to milk this one for all it's worth!

Which could mean many things*: bribing my brother to take me hiking, baking that basket weave cake and giving brother No.'s 4 & 5 the icing bowl to lick out, buying those long-needed organizers for my fabric shelf, taking a walk through the tall, stickery grass at sunset and just enjoying being God's happy creature in His creation.

(*Here's the translation of this thought: "Ooooh! I just LOVE this planner!! Oh, I'm graduating. I'll get it. And those chocolates look so good that I should really get them for myself for graduating. I really, really don't want to do the dishes right now. I'll ask [un-named brother] to do them for me since I'm graduating.)

Just kidding - sorta. Don't get any bad ideas!

Congratulations on your accomplishment, whether it's finishing high school, 9th grade, your new dress, a project, or that pile o'dishes that's indwelt the kitchen for a week.

to God be the glory,

Miss Humphrey

Autumn and Winter Wardrobe Planning

Hello again!

I thought I'd share with you my autumn and winter wardrobe plans in this post. It's composed of dresses I've sewn myself, clothes I've been given, and store-bought clothes.

Winter Walking Skirt and Western Blouse
You can view a post about this skirt here
I can pair any white blouse with this skirt and look like I stepped out of Scotland.

Festive Circle Dress
This is one of my favorite dresses! It has an A-line flare to it and is all around fun and wintry.
You can have a better look at it here.

Gold 1830's Dress
You can look at this dress in more detail here.

Jean skirt and blouse
This jean skirt, made from a pattern for an Edwardian walking skirt, is a staple for all seasons. It matches EVERYTHING, and I have worn it a lot since its creation this spring! For autumn/winter I can pair it with a long sleeve blouse or plaid shirt.

Regency Jumper
Jumpers are a good option for winter since you always layer when you wear them, providing extra warmth. See more of this jumper here.

Midnight Blue 1830's Dress
I just did a post on this dress. You can see it here.

Autumn Foliage
I didn't make this dress; it was a find at Walmart if I recall correctly. Isn't it the spirit of autumn? It features a lower waist than most of my dresses, and I think it would look charming with a sweater or jean jacket.

Blue Anchor Dress
My grandma made this dress and gave it to me on a beach trip. Isn't it beautiful?

That wraps up most of my autumn and winter wardrobe!
I hope this post was inspiring to you. Even if you don't sew or haven't gotten into it yet, you can still compile fun outfits for the cold, drippy seasons.
Have you begun your seasonal festivities yet? I am looking forward to Thanksgiving and Christmas!
I have been enjoying listening to Handel's Messiah recently. Even if you don't celebrate Christmas, it is a beautiful, Scripture-filled musical composition that is worth listening to.

Independence Day

Happy Independence Day, everyone!

I made a design for the dress that I wanted to make for 4th of July, and...didn't. Maybe next year!

See a very similar design that DID get sewn here: https://misshumphreysblog.blogspot.com/2023/03/easter-dress-idea.html

Instead, I am wearing this for the 4th!

My mother made the blouse for me using the skirt of one of my free-hand dresses that didn't turn out so great. She copied it from one of her blouses. Didn't she do a wonderful job?
I paired the blouse with my Edwardian walking skirt.
There you have it - my red, white and blue!
If you are in America, what are you doing to celebrate the 4th?

Miss Humphrey

Dress Renovation! Plus a Sweet Fabric Find

 Hello all,

Thank you so very much for stopping by the blog today!

I have discovered a fun way to use my creative sewing energy. I have begun to rescue clothing items I've sewn that were uncomfortable or dissatisfying in some way, and give them a second life.

My first renovation project was this pink dress. I probably made it 1-2 years ago, and it needed some help. The idea of hydrangea fabric paired with eyelet deserved a second try!

What was wrong with the dress:

The collar was crooked.

The waistband was crooked.

The sleeves weren't crooked, but I didn't care for them.

What I changed on the dress:

I replaced the collar with a simple facing. Another time I might attempt a sewn-in collar. I had better success with a detachable collar, like the sailor collar in my beach dress post.

I re-did the waistband. I unpicked it and re-used the material to upgrade it.

I replaced the sleeves with fun, eyelet cap sleeves.

I replaced the ties in the back with a strip of elastic.

I apologize for the poor quality for a few of my photos!

The back

After doing this dress renovation, I think I'll keep going with some of the other dresses in my shelf. There are a lot of them waiting for me :)

Before I end this post, I wanted to show you some new fabric I found at Joanns...I intend to turn it into a cute summertime garment!

Isn't that a gorgeous print?

How About Some Beach?

 Hello all,

I apologize for this post being late!

I decided to show you my beach dress this time. I made it free-hand last year, and I like the end result.

Makes me want to do some beach dresses in different colors!
I'd also like to experiment with a different collar design.
The collar is separate from the dress. It is attached by a hook-and-eye in the front of the bodice. I like that I can take it off when I want to wash the dress.
I also like that the collar covers my zipper closure.

In case you are curious about the sleeves

What have you been creating recently?

 Miss Humphrey

The Easiest Circle Skirt I've Ever Made....

 Hello all,

Happy May! I thought I'd show you a neat project I did recently. How would you like to see a skirt made out of a tablecloth??

My neighbor bought the tablecloth and gave it to me along with the idea to make it into a skirt.

I cut a hole in the middle of the tablecloth, and a straight line down to the hem to make a seam; that way I could insert an invisible zipper. My favorite part of a tablecloth circle skirt is the fact that it is pre-hemmed!
There was not enough material left for a waistband...but similar fabric was to be found in my mother's stash. I did a narrow waistband, inserted the zipper, and I was DONE!

With a belt

Isn't this cheery fabric?

Hopefully you enjoyed this post...keep checking back!
Thanks so much for visiting the blog...I really appreciate your views and comments.

Miss Humphrey

A Spring Scripture Tea...

 Hello all,

Well, I had a busy weekend! How would you like a tea party report?

I had planned to do a tea for ladies at our congregation back in January.  Tea foods, fellowship, and the sharing of Scripture was the plan. 2:00 pm on April 22nd seemed so far off in the future...Ha! It snuck up on me, and two weeks ahead of time I started doing some serious planning. My mother jumped on board and we drew out ideas for tables...schemed about which people would enjoy sitting with who...and started shopping! In the week leading up to Saturday we did some cooking and crafting for the tea, and took a load of china/glassware with us to midweek Bible study. On Friday night my amiable eldest brother took me into town to set up tables and drop off the second load of stuff.

Saturday morning, my mother and I packed up the car (much easier said than done!!) and went to the Church building. Would you just look at how many supplies we thought we needed??

Note to self: Next time, take your grandmother's advice and have the tea party at home!

Things weren't going too bad. The tables were getting set, the food tucked away in the fridge. The morning was wearing away when we pulled out three tubs of silverware to sort through and find matching sets of forks, spoons and knives.

BIG MISTAKE.

You know what? People don't even care about silverware that much! We should have forgotten about the silverware and started icing cakes and making salad.

That silverware (I won't blame us) caused our tea party to be 1/2 an hour late! And it could have been much worse.

But the participants in the tea party were a lovely group of patient and enthusiastic women...I didn't hear anyone mention the late time! I did a fair share of the mentioning for them :)

At noon a friend from Tennessee who's on a trip to Oregon showed up, and we put her RIGHT to work. She was supposed to be kind of a guest of honor, and instead she spent hours and hours in the kitchen with us, doing whatever we needed!

Speaking of buffets and tea, here was our printed schedule and menu:

One of our tables

(I apologize for the poor quality of the photo)

...The buffet being set up...

We shared our Scriptures after tea - the best part of the whole thing! and began on the arduous task of cleaning up (some of the guests were gracious enough to help!) We and our, ahem, *kitchen* guest of honor, were there until six o'clock putting everything back together. My amiable brother showed up again and took a load of supplies home, and we all retreated to the house on the hill to relax with our guest and her husband.

We had 11 ladies come to Afternoon Tea. They all loved it and took a favor home. We included the plants on the tables as part of their favor.

We are still eating on the tea party food, and enjoying it, too! We made WAY TOO MUCH, which makes meals very easy now!

Oh, and do you want to know how to get in your exercise? Have a tea party away from home! My mother logged in 2 MILES of walking while loading/unloading the car and working at the tea!!

Hopefully, this gives you some inspiration to maybe have a tea party of your own! Just...whatever you do, ASK FOR HELP and budget in LOTS of extra time for preparation!

Hope you enjoyed this post!

Miss Humphrey

Crafty Projects and Party Favor Ideas

 Hello all,

I usually post clothing-related items on this blog, but I am in the midst of a very busy Monday and I thought I'd just show you some other crafty things I've been doing.

I'm preparing to host a tea party at Church this Saturday, and I am working on some of the non-food items currently...like décor and party favors!

My mother and I went to Joanns and picked out some pastel broadcloth for table runners. I am working on sewing those up.

My mother got these cute gift bag kits from Stampin' Up! recently...they're perfect to hold party favors!

I have yet to string ribbon through the holes in the top, but that is the plan.

We decorated clothespins using stickers from Dollar Tree,
and adhered strong magnets to the backs of the clothespins. Perfect fridge magnet clips!

The gift bags will be filled with two chocolates, a clothespin, and some notecards.

(the backs)

*********************************************

I found some finger-kitting yarn on clearance at Joanns. I had to snatch it up...it's in one of my favorite colors!!

My oh-so-soft scarf.

Our neighbor taught us how to make hexagons with fabric (English paper piecing). I'd like to make a quilt with these!

They are made by gathering a fabric hexagon around a smaller paper hexagon. The stiff, glossy paper from junk mail advertisements works well for this. Then you hand-sew over your gathers to secure them. You take the papers out once you're ready to use your hexagons in a project. Starching them first before you take the papers out is a good idea.

Aren't those colors beautiful!?

Free-Hand Sewing ~ Aqua Blooms & Sprigs Dress ~ Retro 1930's

Hello again! Here's the next edition of Spring Sewing '25!  I was inspired by a beautiful dress made by Kristen at Verity Vintage St...
